APEC Scholarship


This scholarship is open to nationals of the following APEC member economies to pursue a full-time Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme at NTU:
Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Canada, Chile, People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, United States, Vietnam.
Eligibility criteria
  • Singaporeans and Singapore Permanent Residents are not eligible to apply
  • A good bachelor’s degree
  • At least two years of management or professional experience
  • Proficiency in the English Language
  • An acceptable score in the Graduate Management Admission Test [GMAT]
  • You should not be on paid employment or accept paid employment or concurrently hold any other scholarship, fellowship, bursary or top-up allowance during the prescribed period of the award

There is no bond attached to the scholarship.

Coverage

  • Each scholarship is tenable for 4 trimesters (≈ 16 months) only

    • Book allowance of S$500.00
    • Tuition fee, health insurance, examination fee and other approved fees, allowances and expenses
    • Cost of one overseas Business Study Mission (for MBA candidates only) undertaken within the tenable period of the scholarship
    • Cost of travel from home country to Singapore on award of the scholarship

MSc - PhD Scholarships (second call) from IRCSET

Postgraduate Research Scholarship Scheme 2008

The Embark Initiative`s Postgraduate Research Scholarship Scheme is designed for either Masters or Doctorate level researchers in the sciences, engineering or technology.

The Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering & Technology invites applications for funding from intending postgraduate researchers under the Embark Initiative Postgraduate Research Scholarship Scheme (2008).

The 2008 programme will fund approximately 80 new entrant Masters or Doctorate level researchers in the sciences, engineering and technology.

A number of additional scholarships will be jointly funded by industry as part of IRCSET`s Enterprise Partnership Scheme (see below for details). This scheme fosters mutually beneficial collaboration between the academic and commercial research sectors.

The scheme is open to candidates worldwide with a small number of the scholarships available to exceptional candidates from non EU member states.

Under the Postgraduate Research Scholarship Scheme, funding of €24,000 is provided for each of three years for Doctorate level research (total funding of €72,000) and one year (€24,000) for Masters level research.

The Closing Date for all applications will be 5.00pm, 20th August 2008.
The Closing Date for all references will be 5.00pm, 27th August 2008.

INTENDING CANDIDATES SHOULD READ ALL OF THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION PRIOR TO SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION.

14 PhD Scholarships in Physical Sciences at University of Pisa

Call for Admission of Candidates Educated Abroad to the Galileo Galilei Ph.D. School of the University of Pisa Year 2009 http://www.unipi.it/studenti/offerta/dottorat/accesso/index.htm

Art. 1 Announcement

The University of Pisa announces a competition, based on academic qualifications, for 14 grants reserved for candidates educated abroad for admission to the "Galileo Galilei Ph.D. School". 12 of the 14 grants are funded by the "Galileo Galilei Ph.D. School", while 1 grant, funded by Ministry for University and Research (D.D. 22 May 22nd, 2007 - n.251), will be assigned for study and research on the subject "Innovative applications in Biomedical Industry" within the Ph.D. programme in Fisica Applicata, and 1 grant, funded by the IIT institute of the CNR, will be assigned for study and research on the subject "Computer science: pervasive communication and computing security" within the Ph.D. programme in Informatica.

The selection will be based on the scientific qualifications of the candidates, bearing in mind the balance between the different areas of the School.

The Ph.D. programmes of the School are:
-Informatica (Computer science)
-Fisica (Physics)
-Fisica applicata (Applied physics)
-Matematica (Mathematics)
-Scienze chimiche (Chemical sciences)

Art. 2 Requirements

Applications are invited from candidates who:
  • are not resident in Italy;
  • have obtained abroad a secondary school qualification, giving access to University education at first degree level, and an academic qualification equivalent to the Italian "laurea specialistica" , e.g. to a Master of Science degree, or expect to obtain this academic qualification before September 9th, 2008.
Both qualifications must be awarded by non-Italian institutions. The equivalence of each qualification to one of the above-mentioned Italian degrees will be established (for the sole purpose of this competition) by the Academic Board of the School. The University may exclude candidates lacking admission requirements at any time.

Art. 3 Applications and Deadline

The application should be presented by submitting the attached form, which is also available on the University Web site at http://www.unipi.it/studenti/offerta/dottorat/accesso, and should arrive, together with the qualifications listed below, by midnight CET (Central European Time) June 30th, 2008. The date of the post mark will not guarantee acceptance.

Applications that are incomplete or that arrive after the deadline (June 30th, 2008) will not be considered. Candidates should send a separate application for each PH.D. Degree course they wish to apply for.

The application form should include the following:
  • personal data (name and surname, date and place of birth, place of residence, and nationality);
  • contact address, e-mail address and telephone number (the candidate must immediately communicate any changes of these data);
  • educational qualification giving access to university education, and an indication of when and where it was obtained.
  • academic qualification with final mark (if any) with an indication of when and where it was obtained, or alternatively a declaration that the candidate expects to obtain the requested academic qualification before September 9th, 2008.
  • information on grants that the candidate may have been awarded by Italian, foreign or international bodies to attend a Ph.D. Degree course or to carry out study and research activities, indicating the starting date, the length, and the amount;
  • title of the Ph.D. Degree course the candidate wishes to apply for.
  • a short resume (maximum 1000 words) illustrating the scientific interests of the candidate and an outline of a possible research plan to be carried out during the Doctoral years. This research plan will not be considered binding if the candidate is admitted to the School.
The following documents must be attached to the form:
  • a certificate of the academic qualification, issued by the University that awarded it; if already awarded, or alternatively (see Art. 6) a declaration that he/she expects to obtain the requested academic qualification before September 9th, 2008. In this latter case, the awarding University and the expected date of awarding must be specified.
  • the degree transcript stating the examinations taken by the candidate, with marks and a short description of their content;
  • a report on any research carried out by the candidate (if any);
  • a list of publications (if any);
  • any further qualification and information that should be taken into account.
In addition two letters of presentation by professors or experts in the field of the candidate must be sent directly by the professors or experts to the Segreteria della Scuola Galileo Galilei or by e-mail to the following address: fierro@di.unipi.it.

All documents must be in Italian or English, or accompanied by a translation into Italian or English. Within 60 days of the publication of the competition result, candidates will be able to recover, at their own expense, all the documents and qualifications they presented. After this period, the University will not be responsible for keeping the above-mentioned documents.

Art. 4 Grants – General Rules

The duration of the University grants mentioned in art. 1 is three years. The grants cannot be combined with any other grants assigned by the Italian Government.

If the candidate already benefits from a study grant of any other kind, the Galileo Galilei Ph.D. School will decide, at its own discretion, whether or not to assign one of the above-mentioned grants after evaluating the one the candidate already enjoys. The grant cannot be assigned to candidates who have already (or even partially) benefited from a similar grant to attend another Ph.D. Degree course or an equivalent course (of the University of Pisa or of any other Italian University or Italian Ph.D. programme). The gross amount of each study grant for the year 2009 is fixed at € 10.561,54. 2

The winners of the competition will receive a contribution of € 200,00 per month for lodging expenses and a contribution towards relocation costs up to a maximum of € 1.000,00, funded by the "Galileo Galilei Ph.D. School". The winners are exempted from paying university fees.

Art. 5 Admission

The grants mentioned in art. 1 are assigned by the Academic Board of the School, on the basis of the evaluation of the academic qualifications of each candidate.

The list of named winners and of those who may be considered as eligible if places become free will be published on the Web site at www.unipi.it/studenti/offerta/dottorat/accesso by July 28 th, 2008. Any candidate named as a winner whose certificate of academic qualification has not been received will be considered to be a winner only conditionally, subject to the qualification certificate being received by September 9th 2008. No personal communication of the competition result will be given.

Art. 6 Enrollment

The winners must enroll, under penalty of exclusion, no later than September 9th 2008, by sending the following documents to the to the Università di Pisa Ufficio "Laureati" - Dottorato di ricerca via Fermi 8 56126 Pisa - Italia or by fax to: +39 050 2212001:
a) the enrollment form, which is available on the University Web site at the following address: www.unipi.it/studenti/offerta/dottorat/accesso;
b) a photocopy of an identity document;
c) one passport-size photograph;
d) a certificate of the academic qualification issued by the University that awarded it, if not already sent together with the application.

In any case the winners must send a message confirming the sending of the documents to the following e-mail address: dottorato.ricerca@adm.unipi.it together with the application. If named winners fail to enroll, the Academic Board of the School may formulate a new list of named winners from the list of those have been considered as eligible in the first selection. This list will be published on the Web site at www.unipi.it/studenti/offerta/dottorat/accesso by September 20th, 2008. These additional named winners must enroll, under penalty of exclusion, no later than October 8th 2008, by sending the required documents as specified at the top of Art.6.

Scholarship Success Story: Money for a Dream School

When Roman Dias began his college search, he looked at the large state schools where many of his classmates chose to attend. It was a tempting option: He had friends there, it was a familiar environment, and tuition was significantly less expensive than at a private school.

However, Roman’s first choice was Dillard University, a historically black college in New Orleans. "Most of my high school was white, so I really wanted the experience that an HBC could give me," Roman says. "I also liked the fact that it’s small, especially compared to a state school."

The only roadblock was the annual tuition of nearly $10,000, which doesn’t include room and board. Total annual costs would run to almost $18,000.

Although Roman and his parents took out loans, he worried about being able to make the annual payments. Roman turned to FastWeb scholarship search to help finance his dream school.

Among the many awards he qualified for was the $1,000 Sam Walton Community Scholarship. Administered by Wal-Mart, more than 2,400 awards are given out annually, with no more than one winner per high school. After an interview process narrowed down the large number of applicants, Roman learned he was his school’s scholarship winner.

"There was a loan that my parents would have had to pay back this year,” Roman says. “The money from this award has helped knock out that loan so they have to pay anything this year."

How To Win A Scholarship?

Q: I am a pre-med student in my junior year. Do you know of any sites that list scholarships for pre-med students of color? Any leads will be appreciated.

A: Here's a tip! For a pre-med student with a strong record there is absolutely no need to limit yourself to searching for "scholarships for pre-med students of color." In fact, that's a tactical mistake. You would be better off attacking a general scholarship list (any major) because there are far more of those scholarships available. Not only that, strong pre-med students of color or otherwise, you can win those scholarships, A, B, C.

In the "Black Excel African American Student's College Guide," which I wrote, I explain the "real deal," if you know what I mean. You'll learn what to do, and why. I tell you how to approach the scholarship sweepstakes, period, step by step.

Many of our students mistakenly target a specific major, and only that. In a nutshell, they narrow their pool of money opportunities. Then, when they can't find that pre-med, pre-law, engineering, chess, art scholarship to apply for they give up. Or they apply, and they discover that those high-powered specific scholarship lists attract the strongest competition. I can tell you that they are the hardest to win. Hey, you go after the "gems," but you've got to strategize, and use all the smarts you have when you review possibilities.

There are, really, thousands upon thousands of scholarships for good and talented students...and that's your gold mine!! Start applying to those...with all the skill, talent, and energy you can muster.

10 Tips for Winning Scholarship Applications

10 Tips for Winning Scholarship Applications

Before you submit your scholarship application, check out these tips, provided by scholarship sponsors nationwide.

Tip #1: Apply only if you are eligible.
Read all the scholarship requirements and directions carefully to make sure you're eligible before you send in your application.

Tip #2: Complete the application in full.
If a question doesn't apply, note that on the application. Don't just leave a blank. Supply all additional supporting material, such as transcripts, letters of recommendation and essays.

Tip #3: Follow directions.
Provide everything that's required, but don't supply things that aren't requested—you could be disqualified.

Tip #4: Neatness counts.
Always type your application, or if you must print, do so neatly and legibly. Make a couple of photocopies of all the forms before you fill them out. Use the copies as working drafts as you develop your application packet.

Tip #5: Write an essay that makes a strong impression.
The key to writing a strong essay is to be personal and specific. Include concrete details to make your experience come alive: the who, what, where, and when of your topic. The simplest experience can be monumental if you present honestly how you were affected.

Tip #6: Watch all deadlines.
To help keep yourself on track, impose your own deadline that is at least two weeks prior to the official deadline. Use the buffer time to make sure everything is ready on time. Don't rely on extensions—very few scholarship providers allow them at all.

Tip #7: Make sure your application gets where it needs to go.
Put your name (and Social Security number, if applicable) on all pages of the application. Pieces of your application may get lost unless they are clearly identified.

Tip #8: Keep a back-up file in case anything goes wrong.
Before sending the application, make a copy of the entire packet. If your application goes astray, you'll be able to reproduce it quickly.

Tip #9: Give it a final "once-over."
Proofread the entire application carefully. Be on the lookout for misspelled words or grammatical errors. Ask a friend, teacher or parent to proofread it as well.

Tip #10: Ask for help if you need it.

The purpose of the PhD position is research training leading to the successful completion of a doctoral degree. The fellowship requires admission to the research-training programme at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The Department of Computer Science at Universidade Nova de Lisboa,
Portugal, is offering the European Masters Program in Computational Logic as part of its Bologna 2nd cycle offer. It is an international distributed Master of Science course (MSc.), in cooperation with the computer science departments in the following universities:

Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Italy

Technische Universitaet Dresden, Germany

Technische Universitaet Wien, Austria

Universidad Politecnica de Madrid, Spain

This program, entirely in English, involves studying one year at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and possibly completing the second year with a stay in one of the partner universities. After this, the student will obtain, together with the European degree, two Master of Science degrees: the Mestrado em Lógica Computacional degree from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, with legal value in Portugal, and the respective Master of Science degree from the visited university, with legal value in its country.

31 May 2008: deadline for all European and non-European students (notification of acceptance: 15 July 2008)

01 September 2008: last deadline only for European students starting at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal (notification of acceptance: 10 September 2008)


SCHOLARSHIPS & MONEY SUPPORT:

There will be 12 consortium scholarships to waive the tuition fee of 3.000 â‚ for students without a scholarship, on the basis of their academic merit.

Every year 10 EMCL students with European citizenship can visit
Australia (Canberra, Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane) up to 3 months to work on a research project, sponsored by the European Master. The study period in Australia is part of the study programme and it is fully recognised by the European Master`s Program in Computational Logic. The guaranteed scholarship is of 3,100 â‚ and it covers the travel and living expenses in Australia.

THE STUDY PROGRAMME:
The European Masters Program in Computational Logic is designed to meet the demands of industry and research in this rapidly growing area. Based on a solid foundation in mathematical logic, theoretical computer science, artificial intelligence and declarative programming students will acquire in-depth knowledge necessary to specify, implement and run complex systems as well as to prove properties of these systems. In particular, the focus of instruction will be in deduction systems, knowledge representation and reasoning, artificial intelligence, formal specification and verification, syntax directed semantics, logic and automata theory, logic and computability. This basic knowledge is then applied to areas like logic and natural language processing, logic and the semantic web, bioinformatics, information systems and database technology, software and hardware verification. Students will acquire practical experience and will become familiar in the use of tools within these applications. In addition, students will be prepared for a future PhD, they will come in contact with the international research community and will be integrated into ongoing research projects. They will develop competence in foreign languages and international relationships, thereby improving their social skills.

Applicants should have a Bachelor degree (
Bologna 1st cycle or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Logic, or other relevant disciplines; special cases will be considered. The programme is part of the Master in Computational Logic (Mestrado em Lógica Computacional) and it has various strengths that make it unique amongst Portuguese and European universities:

Habits of Scholarship Winners

Review the following habits of scholarship winners for tips on how you can make your scholarship quest successful.

  • Successful students always remember the five P’s – Prior preparation prevents poor performance. Prepare for the scholarship search early. Do not wait until your senior year.
  • Successful students do not rely on their parents to do all the work.
  • Successful students vigorously avoid mistakes on their essays and applications. They always spell-check, proofread, and allow one other person to proofread their applications and essay for errors.
  • Successful students do not ignore scholarships that may be local or those for small amounts. Scholarship amounts, even as small as $50, can add up.
  • Successful students do not rely on only one source such as the Internet for their scholarship search. They use many resources. Many scholarships on the Internet or in the free scholarship searches that you find on the World Wide Web are nationally known and are harder to win due to greater competition. Local and regional scholarships are not found as easily through an internet search, although they may be easier to win because the applicant pool is smaller. You have to use a combination of resources to find as many scholarships to apply for as possible.
  • Successful students market themselves well. In their applications, they highlight positive aspects about their lives, especially community involvement.
  • Successful students do not apply to one or two scholarships and wait for the best. They apply for all scholarships they are eligible to win. They keep applying until the total they have won exceeds what they need to pay for the college they want to attend or until they graduate with a degree.
  • Successful students are organized. They keep track of deadlines and materials required to complete an application.
  • Successful students are well rounded. They participate in extracurricular and community activities. They write about these activities in scholarship and college essays in a descriptive manner. They try to benefit others as well as themselves with the extracurricular and community activities in which they are involved.
  • Successful students understand that academic scores and grades alone do not win most scholarships. Scholarship programs look at many factors such as community activities, leadership, presentation of your application package, special or unusual talents or skills, etc.
  • Successful students do not look for the easy way out. It is harder for them to believe in a scholarship scam that promises to do all the work for them. They understand that those things for which we work hardest often bring the greatest rewards. Hard work in the scholarship process as a high school student could result in an easy college life without work later, or a loan-free life after college.

  • Seek good letters of recommendation. When asking people to write you a letter of recommendation, ask them if they can write you a good letter of recommendation. You should pick people who can not only write well, but write well about you. If they seem uncomfortable with the idea of writing a letter of recommendation for you, ask them to suggest someone else who might be a better choice.

Choose people who are relevant to the sponsor's goals. For example, ask a science teacher to write a letter of recommendation for a science scholarship, not your English teacher. All else being equal, it is better to ask someone who has known your longer and who is more impressed by your qualifications.

Depending on the nature of the scholarship program, you should consider asking your teachers or professors, your employer, your coach, the director of a community service activity where you volunteered your time, and anybody who knows you well. Never, however, ask a family member to write a letter on your behalf.

The purpose of the letter of recommendation is to provide the selection committee with third-party documentation and validation of your background. They want to read the opinion of someone who is familiar with your background and knows you well. It is even better if they can compare you with other students, especially students who have won the award previously.

Provide the recommender with a stamped and addressed envelope and any required forms. It is also helpful to provide them with a summary of the purpose of the award. Ask him or her to write the letter at least four weeks before it is due. Gently remind them ten days before the deadline, asking them whether they have sent in the recommendation or need more information from you.

Do not ask to see a copy of the letter, even if they offer to give you a copy. If the recommender provides you with a copy of the letter, the selection committee may suspect that the letter isn't as candid as it might have been otherwise.

Send the writer a thank you note after the letter's been mailed. In all likelihood you will ask them to write additional letters for you. Once they've written one letter on your behalf, the second letter is much easier. If you send them a thank you, it will give them a good impression and make them more willing to spend time writing you additional letters in the future.

  • Create an accomplishments resume. An accomplishments resume is a summary that lists of all your accomplishments, both academic and extracurricular. You will find it helpful to refer to it as your complete applications, to ensure that you do not omit any relevant aspects of your background.

You should provide a copy of your accomplishments resume to the people who will be writing letters of recommendation for you. Even people who have known you for a long time may not be familiar with all of your accomplishments, and the resume can help jog their memory. They will also be able to incorporate details from your resume into their letters, making it seem like they know you better than they do.

The resume will also help save them time when they are writing your letter. Writing a good letter takes time, so anything you can do to make this process easier will help.

HSP Huygens Programme

HSP Huygens Programme is open to students from all countries of the world. It is aimed at talented students who want to come to the Netherlands in the final phase of their bachelor’s studies or during their master’s studies. Study can include research and/or practical training. The programme is also open to PhD students from Croatia, Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania.

The Dutch Minister for Education, Culture and Science has made four million euros available for international students coming to the
Netherlands under the HSP Huygens Programme. There is no fixed number of available scholarships, but the actual number is determined by the total cost of the variable components of the scholarships.

WOTRO Fellowship

There are very few sources of funds available to international students wishing to pursue a PhD or doctorate. Availability of fellowships and research assistantships is limited. On behalf of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs the Dutch foundation WOTRO manages a PhD fund which is aimed at strengthening the research capacity in developing countries by the provision of facilities to individual researchers to obtain a doctorate. These candidates should have links with a local institute in a developing country. The application for the PhD project should be signed by both a local and a Dutch promotor. The research must be development-related. The fellowship period is for a maximum of four years, based on a sandwich formula: an alternating residence in Holland and the country of origin.
